It doesn’t matter what kind of business you run; every business owner wants their website to be the top choice for customers. They want high traffic, repeated visits, and unique visitors. So, what’s involved in ‘keeping customers coming back’?

Is it all about the website’s UX? It’s theme? It’s technology? It’s functionality? It’s hard to really say which the defining feature of a website is. But one thing is clear. You have to focus on the actual website.

People are sensory-driven, emotional creatures that build a lot on first impressions. Having an attractive interface that speaks to its users from the get-go is a tactic to hook them. Make your website easy to use on every platform. Create a smooth and simple look that’s not overly-designed; keep it classy, yet modern.  Once hooked you can now highlight your product via blog feeds, blog-rolls, social network interconnectivity, public discussion forums, chat and even video.

Now you that have them hooked and engaged, there’s only one place to go from here: Incentives. Incentivize your users to utilize your website by providing industry information (with clicks that link to source sites). This way, they can glance at your site for a basic picture of current events within your niche or subject matter.

It’s actually amazing to learn how many people use corporate websites as a tangential navigation point. They read a blog post and somehow end up clicking on articles/sites/updates related to their interest. I see no reason not to use this as a business tactic to keep users coming back. Becoming a leader in your industry and providing relevant, related information increases the chances of recurring visits.

When considering how to keep customers coming back to your website, just think like a marketer and advertiser. First engage people on a subliminal, emotional level, then be more direct. Promote and stimulate a reaction to your presence. If you put effort into your website, via emotional connections, good content, and incentives… you stand a pretty strong chance of customers returning to your site!
